Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is LegalType?

LegalType is software that lets you draft legal documents simply by typing—without switching tools, opening extra windows, or interrupting your workflow. It works seamlessly in the background, so it feels like you’re just writing as usual.

2. Is LegalType hardware or software?

LegalType is 100% software.

The reason it can feel like “something else” is because it doesn’t behave like traditional legal software—it doesn’t take over your screen or force you into a separate interface.

Instead, it works quietly where you already write.

3. Do I need a special keyboard to use LegalType?

No.

LegalType is software, so it works with any keyboard you already use—laptop, external, mechanical, or otherwise.

4. So why do you offer a keyboard?

We offer an optional mechanical keyboard as a visual and tactile aid—not as a requirement.

It’s designed to:

  • Help you remember useful shortcuts and symbols
  • Make frequently used functions more discoverable
  • Provide a more satisfying typing experience for heavy drafting

But it doesn’t power LegalType. The software does all the work.

5. What happens if I don’t use your keyboard?

The experience is the same—the keyboard just makes some of those capabilities easier to see and adopt.

6. Why do some people choose the LegalType keyboard?

For many lawyers, drafting is a full-day activity. The keyboard helps by:

  • Reducing the need to memorize commands
  • Keeping important tools “in sight”
  • Making the experience feel more intuitive from day one

Think of it as a helpful companion—not a dependency.

7. Does LegalType take up screen space?

No.

LegalType is intentionally designed to be invisible while you work. There are no persistent panels or windows competing for your attention.

8. Where does LegalType actually run?

LegalType runs in the background while you work in your existing tools (like Word or your browser).

You don’t need to switch environments or manage another workspace. It integrates into your normal drafting process so your workflow stays exactly the same—just faster and more efficient.

9. Why can’t I normally type legal symbols easily?

Most keyboards communicate using a very old standard that was originally designed for basic text—think letters, numbers, and simple punctuation.

That standard (often referred to as ASCII) works fine for everyday typing, but it’s limited. It doesn’t naturally support the full range of modern characters, like:

  • Legal symbols (§)
  • Mathematical notation (≤, ≠)
  • Accents and international characters (é, ñ)
  • Arrows, formatting marks, and more

So even though your computer can display these characters, your keyboard isn’t designed to easily produce them.

10. What makes LegalType different?

LegalType bridges that gap.

It’s not just a macro tool—it expands what your keyboard can do.

With LegalType:

  • You can trigger macros to insert full clauses or structured text
  • You can instantly type Unicode symbols that aren’t normally accessible from a standard keyboard
  • You can do both without switching tools or memorizing complicated shortcuts

In other words, LegalType turns plain typing into a much more powerful input system—while still feeling completely natural.

11. What does that mean in practice?

Instead of:

  • Searching for a symbol online
  • Copying and pasting from another document
  • Inserting special characters in Word
  • Memorizing obscure key combinations

You just type—and LegalType inserts exactly what you need.

The simple takeaway:

Your keyboard was designed for basic text.

LegalType upgrades it—so you can type anything.
